The holiday season is an exciting one around Royal Gorge Anglers…..Little lights in the shop are twinkling, the Golden Retriever sprouts reindeer antlers, and you can ride an ice flow all the way from Salida to Canon City.
All kidding aside, there really are some awesome opportunities for anglers to up their game in preparation for the spring time, or to get on their game for winter fishing on CO tailwaters.
This Friday in our tying classroom, we are featuring one of the most talented young tyers in the industry. Juan Ramirez will be presenting a free demonstration on his magnificent Hopper patterns from 11AM to 1PM. If you fish Southern Colorado from May through August, you need to understand how important a hopper pattern is to your arsenal. Come down and see the best of the best tie some of the most innovative patterns in the industry, even bring your vice and give it a whirl!
The following Saturday, December 17th from 1-4 pm, we will be holding our annual Chirstmas Bash at the Flyshop. Everyone is invited, and you can bet this year’s shindig is one for the record books! Our special guest Landon Mayer will be here to discuss winter fishing on tailwaters, and to present his new book Colorado’s Best Fly Fishing. We will also have guest Tyers such as Shea Gunkel, Clint Werthman, Curtis Andrews, Larry Kingrey and others; in our classroom presenting some of the winter’s best selections on such tailwaters as the South Platte, Taylor River and Arkansas River below Pueblo Reservoir. Shea Gunkel's Splatte Shotglass Quill
Red Quill Nymph? You bet. This is the hottest new series in the industry. Shea's Shotglass series captures the necesarry color and light variations along with the very necesarry oxygen bubble thorax. This pattern fishes tremendously during the late July and August Red Quill timeframe; however, don't pull it from your arsenal, as it can be a double digit producer on any watershed at any time of year!

Bead: MFC Lucent Christmas Red Tungsten Bead+ Clear Glass Bead
Thread: Red Ultra-Thread 70 Denier
Tail: Natural Brown Henback
Abdomen: Glass Bead
Ribbing: Black Ice Thread
Wing case/ Wing Buds: Flash Mirage Tinsel/ Brown Flourofibre
Directions
-Tie in the tail and rib at the 50% point and take both materials back just beyond the hook bend
-Return the thread to the tie in point and rib the body with the ice thread
-Tie off the ribbing and tie in flash material at the same point
-Tie in flouro fibre (14)
-With your finger, hold the bead in the thorax area an cross your thread above the bead and make a few hard wraps to secure it in place
-Now that your thread is in front of the bead, towards the eye of the hook, create a tapered head to the fly using thread wraps.
-Pull the wing bud material over the bead and secure behind the eye with two thread wraps
-Pull the flash over the bead and secure with one thread wrap, fold it back, and secure with two more firm wraps
-Cut flash material and split the flouro fibre in to two equal clumps
-Pull the each clump of flouro opposite of each other to create wing buds
-Whip finish and trim flouro just behind wing case
-5 minute epoxy along the entire fly making sure to cover the entire wing case and tie off point
