Golden Years, you have been one-up-ed!
The Caddis Season on the Arkansas has been nothing short of awesome thus far, and should continue to foster record breaking productivity for anglers........
The hatch has continued to march upriver after our little cold spell, and hatch sizes have been impressive! Currently our guides are focusing on the Texas Creek to Valley Bridge area for peak adult action. Although we have seen some sporadic localized hatches as far up as Howard, productivity cotinues to be on the lower river.
Don't forget the Egglayers.....
If you truly want to maximize your dry fly action, the best time period is and will always be in the early evenings to dark. Female egglaying caddis make thier way back to the water and make easy prey for the trout. Don't go home too early! Don't forget our Angler's Lodge is now fully operational, and we have rooms available for as little as $85 per night.
Heavy productivity will continue to focus different emerger fishing techniques. Having an arsenal of differently weighted, sized, and colored caddis pupa as well as recognizing timing for them will be key for high fish number days.
Adults will continue to come off in hoards in the Texas Creek to Valley Bridge area for the next week or so; the hatch will continue to progress towards the Salida Area by around mother's day. Don't forget, however, that fish down from the large hatches will continue to key on caddis and don't require large hatches to maintain productivity on top.......
Last, but not least, the coming 2 weeks are the biggest two productivity weeks of the season for anglers on the Arkansas. As such,, you can expect a few people....If you have never fished private water during the hatch, it is highly recommended! Hire one of our extremely talented guides to show you one our tremendous properties on the river.......
Its not only Caddis......Blue Wing Olive fishing will continue to be extremely productive throughout the Caddis Hatch, so don't put away your mayfly boxes quite yet........

This is the fly of choice.....still......
Graphic Caddis

|
|
The Graphic Caddis is another pattern from John Barr. John developed this pattern to mimic the emerging caddis pupae, as it swims from the river bottom to the surface. There has been a lot of talk about the air bubble carried by caddis pupae these days, and John has added that attractive feature to the fly with a tag of holographic flashabou at the back of this fly. Subtle, yet definite sparkle is one of the keys to this fly. I really like this fly because John has managed to make a really ugly bug into a beautiful fly. As is John's trademark, the fly is simple to tie and uses few materials while being greatly effective. I like to use the Graphic Caddis as an attractor, fished with weight (or behind a Copper John) along the bottom, during the summer months. I think fish see so many caddis pupae during the season that it becomes a food staple, even when there is not a blizzard hatch in progress and they keep on the look out for these tasty morsels. I also like this fly dropped off a dry caddis pattern (6-18 inches back) during a hatch. Make this pattern a major part of your caddis selection for this years hatch, you won't be sorry!
